the wildest course in the world

SKUKUZA GOLF CLUB Skukuza Golf Club is a magnificent 9-hole (18-tee) course situated in the world-renowned Kruger National Park on the outskirts of Skukuza rest camp. The rich wildlife sanctuary surrounding the golf course is home to the Big Five, a huge variety of birds and countless animals, which all conspire to provide our visitors with a harmonious close-to-nature golfing experience. Since the course is not fenced-in, uninvited spectators are a common sight, hippo, impala, warthog and baboons to mention but a few. The course offers the pleasure of challenge and adventure. For example #2, Par 3, have water on the left and to the back of the green. The signature hole #9, Par 3 of about 150m is played across Lake Panic. The Skukuza Golf Course has no bunkers, although ‘aerial bunkers’ abound because of the many trees found on the course. SOME HISTORY ON SKUKUZA GOLF COURSE When the Kruger National Park was established 110 years ago, there were no sporting facilities for staff. A fund for recreational activities was introduced after World War 2 and during the 1950’s and 1960’s the present day community hall and adjacent sporting facilities were developed. Many of the sporting facilities were created rather by accident than design as the rugby / cricket field appeared soon after the Technical Services Department “tested” heavy machinery in the area. SKUKUZA FOUNDER’S LOUNGE Enjoy a pre-game drink or post-game de-brief at the Founders Lounge, which has recently been given a whole new look and feel. The members-only space is the ideal spot to unwind and relax, with comfortable seating and quiet nooks to catch up with old and new friends. Skukuza Golf Club also offers a shuttle service to visitors from Kruger Gate and Skukuza Safari Lodge.

THE LADIES SECTION AT SEDGELINKS

Even though Sedge Links is a “short course” club we are very proud to be part of it and don’t be fooled, many people come to the Links thinking it will be an easy game, and by the time they reach the 18th hole are quick to admit it has a lot of challenges. It is a huge test of your short game and temperament with many holes having water hazards (just as a starter no.1 hole has water on either side plus a greenside bunker!). The ladies section has on average 18 active players weekly, and we have great competitions and plenty of fun!. We do of course take our golf seriously and keep to the rules as per the R&A rule book, with some normal local rules. This year we are very proud to have secured sponsorship through Pick ‘n Pay Sedgefield and Wimpy Sedgefield, a great feather in our cap and something we truly appreciate; Sedgefield is a small village and “supporting local” is very important to us. The committee try to make playing fun even when it’s serious! Weekly formats are planned for the year ahead and “special” games are scheduled well in advance to ensure all bases are covered on the day. Golf is important but like with any club the social side is to, one of our most highly contested competitions of the year is the Islanders vs Villagers game. We dress up in team colours /outfits and perform a war cry (aka the haka, each year is different) before the game starts. Bragging rights are given for the year for whoever wins the prized trophy. Last year the Islanders won by the smallest of margins, however, it was their turn as the Villagers had won three years on the trot, so it was the Islanders turn – fair is fair! Every month we play a monthly Medal and Putt competition (we have 3 divisions Gold, Silver and Bronze) which is followed by a social get together, usually a braai or wood fired pizza’s cooked on site at Sedge Links (the best in Sedgefield in our opinion). CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS We also play a 3-month Eclectic competition and also a Knockout competition which runs over and above the normal mix of different weekly Stableford formats. CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS CONTINUED Club Championships are held over two weeks in early December, this being our most serious competition of the year, with players being announced onto the 1st Tee, which ramps the nerves up even more! THE YEAR AHEAD Winners are announced after our final game at our year end function. This year in conjunction with our sponsors Sedgefield Pick ‘n Pay and Wimpy, we are holding a newly created “Annual Ladies Open” Competition, whereby other lady players from surrounding clubs will be invited to play. We are hoping that this prized event will be hotly contested by all the local clubs. We are extremely privileged to have the South African Ladies National Coach, Val Holland conduct monthly clinics for the ladies throughout the winter. Sunday mornings have been so much fun and the ladies games have dramatically improved because of them. Yes another feather in the cap for the golfing ladies of Sedge! “One” of the great things about Sedge Links is that we have a diverse group of ladies; from different ages (ranging from the early 30’s to over 80’s) to different standards of golf which vary from a +1 handicap to a 23 handicap! Sedge Links is definitely worth a visit and we are always looking for new players to join us and welcome visiting ladies, even if just passing through for a game.

PICTURE PERFECT: GOLF COURSES AS A BRAND

Let’s speak about unique selling points and golf courses as a brand. On a recent trip to the Southern Cape, I had the pleasure of shooting three courses on the Garden Route – Plettenberg Bay, Knysna golf course and George golf club. In their own right, all three are fantastic courses. That said they are all very different and it is this difference that needs to be identified and ‘sold’ to the market. For example, Knysna is one of the only courses in South Africa that literally has tidal lagoon waters coming through the course. As the tide rises the waters flow into the course in the north-western corner and with-it numerous fish species a truly amazing site and unique. This could be used as their unique selling point to entice golfers to come to play the course and experience this phenomenon. Not only great to witness but it makes for great imagery. Plettenberg Bay country club Plettenberg Bay country club located in a private nature reserve has some of the most untouched coastal forests of any course in the country with massive Yellow woods trees around every corner. The back nine winds up the Piesang Valley and the birdlife is second to none with common sightings of the stunning Knysna Turaco. This is their unique selling point to entice golfers to come to play the course while enjoying nature at its best. George golf club – set in the heart of George is a traditional parkland course with mature tree-lined fairways. The unique thing about this course is the exquisite Outeniqua Mountains towering over it. More so than any other courses in the town of George, the course is set very near to the base of the mountains which adds so much value to the experience. This is where my job comes in to create enticing, yet unique, visuals of these courses. Imagery supplemented by engaging text then becomes a very powerful marketing tool. It allows each club to elevate itself in a way that others can’t and increase the foot flow through the club, which is what it’s all about. See you on the course.
