Paris Olympics 2024

BRIEF OVERVIEW OF THE RULES

Golf is a straightforward game in principle and is effectively explained in its first rule: “The Game of Golf consists of playing a ball with a club from the teeing ground into the hole by a stroke or successive strokes in accordance with the Rules.” Players use different clubs based on varying criteria, including distance to the hole and playing surface.

The golf format at the Olympic Games is stroke play, which consists of counting the number of strokes a golfer takes to complete an 18-hole course played four times over four days. The player with the lowest number of strokes at the end of the four rounds wins the tournament.

Did You Know?

Golf was one of the first modern sports to codify its rules in 1744 in Edinburgh, Scotland. At the end of the 19th century, the first women’s tournaments were established. Today, there are more than 60 million golfers and over 30,000 golf courses worldwide.

Olympic History

Prior to the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, golf had featured on the Olympic programme on just two occasions: in 1900 and 1904.
The sport made its Olympic comeback in Brazil and was contested again at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games in 2021

When to Watch During The 2024 Paris Olympics

Two golf tournaments will be staged for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. Paris marks the third consecutive Olympic Games to include golf after its extended absence ended in Rio in 2016.

The men will have the honor, teeing off first on Thursday, August 1 during Round 1, with the final round to be played on Sunday, August 4.

Once the course has been repaired, it will be the women’s turn, with play starting on Wednesday, August 7 and concluding on Saturday, August 10.

Home of the Ryder Cup

Le Golf National in Saint – Quentin – en – Yvelines, will host the Olympic golf tournaments for men and women in 2024.
Le Golf National is known for its links-inspired bunkers and undulating fairways. But unlike a links course, water can be found on numerous holes and will test even the steeliest of nerves.

Nestled among Europe’s premier golf venues, Golf National is set to host 120 ambitious players for the Olympic tournament, offering a course that aligns perfectly with their aspirations. Among its two 18-hole courses, “L’Albatros” stands out for its complexity and competitiveness, having hosted major international events like the 2018 Ryder Cup.

Legacy

Owned by the French Golf Federation, Golf National was established in 1991 as the headquarters for the national technical center for golf and the annual host of the French Open. Transforming a flat, 139-hectare site into a world-class venue required three years of meticulous work, resulting in two 18-hole courses and a 7-hole beginner course.

Golf National is also dedicated to sustainable practices, continually enhancing its environmental management and preserving its heritage. The Golf National team collaborates with the French Ministry of Ecology, Sustainable Development, and Energy to achieve these goals.

Following the Paris 2024 Olympics, Golf National will maintain its status as a premier location, continuing to host top-tier national and international golf competitions.
